What is Red Blood Cell Antibody Screen?
The immune system can form IgG or IgM antibodies against red blood cell antigens following exposure through transfusion, pregnancy, or haemolytic disease. The indirect antiglobulin test (IAT) detects these circulating antibodies by incubating patient serum with a panel of reagent red cells carrying known antigens; agglutination after adding anti-human globulin indicates the presence of an antibody. Most clinically significant antibodies are IgG and react at 37°C or in the IAT phase, targeting antigens in systems such as Rh, Kell, Duffy, Kidd, or S/s.
