What is Red Blood Cell Antigen Typing?
Red-cell antigen typing determines which antigens the patient's own cells carry, using antisera or molecular methods to test for Rh (D, C, E, c, e), Kell, Duffy, Kidd, S/s, and other systems. Knowing the patient phenotype clarifies which antibodies are alloantibodies (directed against foreign antigens) versus autoantibodies (against self) and informs compatibility when the patient requires transfusion in future.
