What is Total Protein, Serum?
Total serum protein is the combined mass of all circulating proteins — predominantly albumin (approximately 60%) and globulins (approximately 40% — alpha-1, alpha-2, beta, and gamma fractions). It is measured by the biuret colorimetric reaction. Total protein reflects the sum of hepatic synthetic output (albumin) and immunoglobulin production (gamma globulins), and is interpreted most informatively through protein electrophoresis when an abnormal fraction pattern is suspected.
