What is Antinuclear Antibody Pattern?
The fluorescence pattern reflects the intracellular distribution of the target antigen. Homogeneous staining arises from antibodies to chromatin or histones; speckled patterns from antibodies to extractable nuclear antigens such as Sm, RNP, SSA, or SSB; nucleolar patterns from anti-RNA polymerase or anti-fibrillarin; and centromere patterns from anti-centromere antibodies. The pattern is descriptive and helps prioritise which extractable nuclear antigen or other autoantibody assays to request next.
