U1 ribonucleoprotein is another small nuclear RNP particle. Anti-RNP antibodies recognise the 70-kDa, A, and C polypeptides of U1-RNP and are characteristic of mixed connective tissue disease when present in high titre without other specific antibodies.
High-titre anti-RNP in isolation defines mixed connective tissue disease, which presents with overlapping features of lupus, scleroderma, and myositis. Anti-RNP is also found in about 30 per cent of SLE patients, often alongside anti-Sm, and may be associated with Raynaud phenomenon and lung involvement.
