What is Apolipoprotein B?
Apolipoprotein B is the principal structural protein of the atherogenic lipoproteins — LDL, VLDL, IDL, and lipoprotein(a) — with one apolipoprotein B-100 molecule per particle. Because each atherogenic particle carries exactly one apolipoprotein B, the serum concentration provides a direct count of the total number of atherogenic particles, irrespective of how much cholesterol each carries. It is synthesised in the liver (apoB-100) and intestine (apoB-48), and the B-100 form is the focus of cardiovascular risk assessment.
