What is Triglycerides?
Triglycerides are the principal storage lipids, composed of three fatty acids esterified to glycerol and transported in chylomicrons after a meal and in VLDL synthesised by the liver. Serum triglycerides rise markedly after eating, which is why fasting samples have traditionally been used, and they are strongly influenced by carbohydrate and alcohol intake, adiposity, and insulin resistance. Very high concentrations reflect impaired clearance of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and carry a risk of acute pancreatitis independent of atherosclerotic risk.
