What is Total Cholesterol?
Total cholesterol represents the sum of cholesterol carried across all lipoprotein fractions, including LDL, HDL, and VLDL. Cholesterol is a sterol essential for cell membranes, steroid hormone synthesis, and bile acid production, derived from both hepatic synthesis and dietary intake. Because the measurement aggregates pro-atherogenic (LDL, VLDL) and protective (HDL) fractions into a single number, its clinical meaning depends entirely on how that cholesterol is distributed among the lipoproteins.
