What is Serum Creatinine?
Creatinine is a breakdown product of muscle creatine phosphate, released into the circulation at a relatively constant rate proportional to muscle mass and filtered freely at the glomerulus with minimal tubular reabsorption. Its plasma concentration inversely reflects glomerular filtration rate, making it the most widely used endogenous marker of kidney function, though it is insensitive to early GFR decline.
