What is Glucose?
Glucose is the primary energy substrate for most tissues and the principal fuel for the brain. Its plasma concentration reflects the balance between intestinal absorption, hepatic production (glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis), and peripheral uptake mediated by insulin and other hormones. Tight glucose regulation is maintained by insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells in response to rising blood glucose, counterbalanced by glucagon, cortisol, and catecholamines during fasting or stress.
