What is Blood Urea Nitrogen?
Urea is the principal nitrogenous end-product of protein catabolism, synthesised in the liver from ammonia via the urea cycle and freely filtered by the glomerulus. Approximately half the filtered urea is reabsorbed passively in the proximal tubule, with further reabsorption in the collecting duct when antidiuretic hormone raises tubular permeability. Because reabsorption varies with urine flow and tubular transit time, BUN is sensitive not only to glomerular filtration but also to volume status, dietary protein intake, and the rate of protein catabolism. Its plasma concentration reflects the balance among hepatic synthesis, glomerular filtration, and tubular handling.
