It converts a concentration into an estimate of filtering capacity standardised to body surface area, and inherits every limitation of creatinine — notably its dependence on muscle mass and its lag during rapidly changing function.
As the panel's derived renal value, eGFR translates creatinine into a clinically graded estimate of kidney function used to stage chronic kidney disease, adjust drug dosing, and trigger nephrology input. It is read with creatinine trend, BUN, and the electrolyte and acid-base pattern; a stable estimate below the threshold over at least three months is required before chronic kidney disease is inferred from the panel alone.
