What is Fasting Insulin?
Insulin is a 51-amino acid peptide hormone secreted by pancreatic beta cells in response to rising blood glucose, amino acids, and incretin hormones (GLP-1, GIP). In the fasting state, basal insulin secretion maintains hepatic glucose output suppression and prevents lipolysis. Fasting insulin reflects beta cell basal secretory output and, when elevated relative to fasting glucose, indicates peripheral insulin resistance requiring compensatory hyperinsulinaemia to maintain euglycaemia.
