What is Lipase?
Lipase is a digestive enzyme secreted predominantly by pancreatic acinar cells into the duodenum, where it hydrolyses dietary triglycerides into fatty acids and monoglycerides. Small amounts originate from the stomach, tongue, and intestinal mucosa, but the pancreatic isoform dominates serum activity. In acute pancreatic injury, acinar damage releases lipase into the circulation, where levels rise within 3 to 6 hours, peak at around 24 hours, and remain elevated for 8 to 14 days — considerably longer than amylase. Clearance is principally renal, with reabsorption and catabolism in the proximal tubule.
