What is Nickel (Ni), Urine, Random?
Nickel is a transition metal with both essential (trace cofactor in some organisms) and toxic properties at higher human exposures. Primary exposure routes include dietary intake (legumes, nuts, chocolate, oats, and certain vegetables are nickel-rich foods), drinking water, tobacco smoke, nickel alloy implants and orthopaedic prostheses, jewellery, and occupational exposure in refining, electroplating, and stainless steel manufacturing. Nickel is excreted primarily renally. Nickel disrupts cellular signalling through epigenetic mechanisms, including inhibition of DNA repair enzymes and histone demethylases.
