What is Thallium (Tl), Urine, Random?
Thallium is a highly toxic trace element with no known biological role. It mimics potassium due to similar ionic radius and charge, substituting for potassium at sodium-potassium ATPase and other potassium-dependent transport systems, disrupting neurological, gastrointestinal, and hair follicle function. Primary exposure sources include cigarette smoke (tobacco plants bioaccumulate thallium from soil), contaminated food grown in industrially polluted soil, cement dust, and historical use in rodenticides and depilatory agents (now banned). Thallium is excreted both renally and in faeces.
