What is Aspartate Aminotransferase?
Aspartate aminotransferase is a pyridoxal-5'-phosphate-dependent enzyme present in both cytosolic and mitochondrial compartments of cells. It catalyses the reversible transfer of an amino group from aspartate to alpha-ketoglutarate, forming oxaloacetate and glutamate, a reaction central to amino-acid catabolism and the malate-aspartate shuttle. AST is abundant in hepatocytes, cardiac myocytes, skeletal muscle, kidney, brain, and red blood cells, so elevated serum activity is less tissue-specific than ALT. When cells are damaged the cytosolic isoform is released early; severe or prolonged injury releases the mitochondrial isoform, which persists longer in the circulation.
