What is Complete Blood Count with Differential?
The CBC quantifies the three primary formed elements of blood — erythrocytes, leucocytes, and thrombocytes — alongside derived indices reflecting erythrocyte size and haemoglobin content. Whole blood is collected into EDTA anticoagulant to prevent clotting. The differential provides the proportional and absolute distribution of leucocyte subtypes (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils), which characterise the immune and inflammatory state. Erythrocyte indices — MCV, MCH, MCHC — are computed from the primary cell counts and haemoglobin measurement.
