What is Progesterone?
Progesterone is a C21 steroid hormone produced primarily by the corpus luteum following ovulation, with secondary production by the adrenal cortex and, during pregnancy, the placenta. Its synthesis requires cholesterol as substrate and is driven by the post-ovulatory LH surge. Progesterone prepares the endometrium for embryo implantation, suppresses further ovulation, and has anxiolytic effects via conversion to the neurosteroid allopregnanolone. It is metabolised by the liver to pregnanediol, excreted in urine.
