What is Luteinising Hormone?
LH is a gonadotropin co-secreted with FSH by anterior pituitary gonadotrophs in response to pulsatile GnRH. The mid-cycle LH surge — triggered by rising estradiol through a positive feedback mechanism — drives ovulation by inducing oocyte maturation and luteinisation of the dominant follicle, forming the corpus luteum. LH also stimulates ovarian theca cell androgen production.
