What is Comprehensive Metabolic Panel?
The CMP evaluates three organ systems simultaneously: hepatic function (ALT, AST, ALP, bilirubin, total protein, albumin — reflecting synthetic, metabolic, and excretory hepatocyte function); renal function (creatinine, BUN, eGFR — reflecting glomerular filtration and tubular handling); and basic metabolic status (glucose, calcium, sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate — reflecting electrolyte homeostasis and glucose regulation). Albumin serves dual roles as a marker of hepatic synthetic function and nutritional status.
