What is Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate?
DHEA-S is the sulfate ester and primary circulating storage form of DHEA, produced almost exclusively by the adrenal zona reticularis. Its long plasma half-life (7–10 hours versus 1–3 hours for DHEA) and minimal diurnal variation make it the preferred adrenal androgen marker for clinical testing. DHEA-S production declines progressively with age — a process termed adrenarche in reverse — with peak levels occurring in the mid-twenties followed by approximately 2–5% annual decline.
