What is Lipid Panel (Total Cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C, Triglycerides, Non-HDL-C)?
The standard lipid panel quantifies the major lipoprotein-associated cholesterol fractions and triglycerides in fasting serum. LDL-C is most commonly calculated via the Friedewald equation (TC − HDL − [TG ÷ 5]) and is unreliable when triglycerides exceed 400 mg/dL. HDL-C is directly measured and is the anti-atherogenic lipoprotein fraction. Non-HDL-C (TC − HDL-C) captures all atherogenic lipoprotein cholesterol and is recommended as a secondary target by current guidelines. Triglycerides are measured directly as a marker of VLDL burden and endogenous lipoprotein metabolism.
