What is Sex Hormone Binding Globulin?
SHBG is a glycoprotein produced by the liver that binds testosterone and estradiol with high affinity (and DHT with the highest affinity), as well as other steroid hormones with lower affinity. Hepatic SHBG synthesis is upregulated by oestrogens, thyroid hormones, and phytoestrogens, and suppressed by androgens, insulin, and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). The SHBG-bound fraction of sex steroids is biologically inactive; only the free and loosely albumin-bound fractions are bioavailable.
