What is 2-Hydroxyestrone?
2-Hydroxyestrone is formed by cytochrome P450 1A1 and 1A2 hydroxylation of oestrone at the C2 position. It has weak oestrogenic activity and is catabolised rapidly via catechol-O-methyltransferase to methoxyoestradiols, which are excreted. This pathway is considered the predominant 'protective' route of oestrogen metabolism.
