What is Arsenic (Urine, Total and Speciated)?
Arsenic exists in organic (arsenobetaine, arsenocholine from seafood) and inorganic forms. Inorganic arsenic and its methylated metabolites (monomethylarsonic acid, dimethylarsinic acid) are toxic; arsenobetaine is non-toxic and rapidly excreted. Speciated analysis separates toxic from non-toxic forms. Urinary excretion is the primary route, with a half-life of days for inorganic arsenic.
