What is Barium (Urine)?
Barium is encountered in drilling fluids, fireworks, and medical contrast agents (barium sulphate, which is poorly absorbed). Soluble barium salts can be toxic, blocking potassium channels and causing hypokalaemia, muscle weakness, and cardiac arrhythmias. Urinary barium reflects recent soluble-barium exposure.
