What is Mercury (Urine)?
Mercury exists in elemental, inorganic, and organic (methylmercury) forms. Urinary mercury primarily reflects inorganic mercury and elemental mercury vapour exposure; methylmercury from fish is predominantly excreted in faeces, so urine mercury is less sensitive for dietary methylmercury but useful for dental amalgam vapour and occupational exposure. Renal excretion is the main route for inorganic mercury, with a biological half-life of weeks to months.
