What is Aflatoxins (B1, G1, G2, M1), Urine?
Aflatoxins are difuranocoumarin mycotoxins produced primarily by Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus — ubiquitous storage moulds contaminating maize, peanuts, tree nuts, cottonseed, and spices, particularly under warm and humid conditions. Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is the most potent naturally occurring carcinogen known — classified as an IARC Group 1 human carcinogen — activated in the liver by CYP450 enzymes (principally CYP3A4 and CYP1A2) to a reactive epoxide that forms DNA adducts causing TP53 mutations associated with hepatocellular carcinoma. Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) — the 4-hydroxylated metabolite of AFB1 — is the primary urinary biomarker of dietary AFB1 exposure, excreted in urine within hours of ingestion. AFM1 is also found in the breast milk and urine of dairy animals consuming AFB1-contaminated feed.
