What is Mycophenolic Acid (Mycophenol), Urine?
Mycophenolic acid is a secondary metabolite produced by multiple Penicillium species — particularly Penicillium brevicompactum, P. roqueforti, and related species found in water-damaged environments, grain storage, and food production. In the environmental context, mycophenolic acid acts as a potent inhibitor of inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH), an enzyme critical for de novo purine biosynthesis in rapidly dividing cells — selectively suppressing lymphocyte proliferation. It is also the pharmacologically active compound in mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), the immunosuppressant drug. Environmental exposure through food contamination (Penicillium-contaminated cheeses, grains) and water-damaged building air exposure are the non-pharmaceutical sources of urinary mycophenolic acid.
