What is Sterigmatocystin, Urine?
Sterigmatocystin is a polyketide mycotoxin produced primarily by Aspergillus versicolor — a prevalent mould in water-damaged buildings, indoor dust, and stored grains — and is the penultimate biosynthetic precursor to aflatoxin B1 in the aflatoxin pathway. Aspergillus versicolor does not complete the biosynthetic conversion to aflatoxin, making sterigmatocystin the end-product accumulating in Aspergillus versicolor-contaminated environments. Like aflatoxin B1, sterigmatocystin is activated by hepatic CYP450 enzymes to a reactive epoxide forming DNA adducts.
