What is Ochratoxin A, Urine?
Ochratoxin A is a chlorinated isocoumarin-phenylalanine mycotoxin produced primarily by Aspergillus ochraceus, Aspergillus carbonarius, and Penicillium verrucosum — moulds prevalent in water-damaged buildings, stored grains, dried fruits, coffee, cocoa, wine, beer, and spices. OTA is a renal tubular nephrotoxin, immunosuppressant, and IARC Group 2B possible human carcinogen absorbed readily from the gastrointestinal tract and bound tightly to serum albumin. Its elimination half-life is prolonged — approximately 35 days in humans — due to enterohepatic recirculation, allowing accumulation with repeated low-level dietary or environmental exposure. A small proportion is excreted unchanged in urine, making urinary OTA a biomarker of recent and accumulated exposure.
